Payroll jobs rise in Victoria
Payroll jobs rose 1.0 per cent in Victoria over the fortnight to 31 October and 0.5 per cent nationally, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.
Bjorn Jarvis, head of Labour Statistics at the ABS, said: “Victorian payroll jobs started to recover across October following the progressive easing of COVID-19 restrictions.”
“Nationally, payroll jobs remained 3.0 per cent lower than mid-March; 6.0 per cent lower in Victoria and 2.0 per cent lower in the rest of Australia.”
Payroll jobs in Accommodation and food services are the most affected among industries over the COVID-19 period. Since mid-March, they remain 15.5 per cent lower nationally and 25.9 per cent lower in Victoria.
Accommodation and food services payroll jobs rose 1.1 per cent nationally over the fortnight to 31 October, compared to a 4.6 per cent rise in Victoria over the same period.
While Victorian payroll jobs have been the most affected over the COVID-19 period compared to the rest of Australia, payroll jobs worked by females in Victoria experienced greater losses than males by mid-April. By the end of October, Victorian payroll jobs worked by females were down 6.1 per cent from mid-March compared to 6.5 per cent for males.
